Vaginal Yeast Infection (Candidiasis)

What it is

An overgrowth of the fungus Candida (most often Candida albicans) in the vagina—a condition that disrupts the normal microbial balance. It is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection

Symptoms

·         Intense vaginal and vulvar itching, irritation, or soreness

·         Burning sensation during urination or intercourse

·         Thick, white “cottage-cheese”–like discharge, usually odorless

·         Redness or swelling of the vulva; possible pain or tenderness

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

What it is

A condition caused by an imbalance in the natural vaginal bacteria—typically a decline in protective Lactobacillus and overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria—leading to a shift in vaginal environment

 Symptoms

  • Thin, watery discharge that may be grey‑white or even greenish

  • Strong "fishy" or musty vaginal odor, often worse after sex or during a period

  • Burning sensation during urination, or mild vaginal irritation/itching (though many people have no symptoms)

Period Delay / Missed Period (Amenorrhea)

What it is

When a menstrual period is significantly late (≥5–7 days) or absent for multiple weeks or months, it may be classified as amenorrhea—often seen with hormonal, stress-related, or physiological changes

Symptoms

  • No menstrual bleeding when a period is expected (multiple days to several weeks late)

  • Possible additional clues: breast tenderness or swelling, mild changes in mood, fatigue, or other hormonal fluctuation symptoms

Birth Control (Hormonal Methods): What It Is & Common Symptoms

What it is

Prescription methods (like combined estrogen‑progestin pills, progestin-only pills, patches, or rings) used to prevent pregnancy and may also impact menstrual cycles, hormones, and physical well-being.

 Symptoms / Side Effects

  • Spotting or breakthrough bleeding, especially early in use

  • Headaches, nausea, breast tenderness

  • Mood changes, fatigue, acne, bloating, weight fluctuations

  • Sometimes lower libido or slight emotional shifts; these often stabilize after a few months of use
